Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)
Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) are an integral part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs offered in New Hampshire's CTE Centers.
CTSOs provide students with the opportunity to gain leadership and life skills as part of their career and technical education programs. These skills include decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork essential for successful job performance and community service.
There is something for all CTSO members as they prepare for their chosen career. CTSOs help young people to become community leaders through local and state projects. Organizations receiving support from CTSOs include Habitat for Humanity, ABC Quilts, High Hopes, David's House, Cancer Society, Blood Drives, Thanksgiving Baskets, and County Homes to name a few. Students raised more than $31,000.00 last year that was donated back to the community. Thousands of hours were accumulated through community service projects and fundraising.
CTSO members have the opportunity to develop leadership skills though their class curricula and projects. These skills are supplemented with activities such as career competitions, educational symposiums, networking and workshops held at state conferences. The state conferences also include competition in skills such as public speaking, problem solving and demonstration of specific skills (e.g., food preparation, automobile repair, cosmetology, etc.). Students who successfully place in state contests receive awards, prizes and scholarships and are eligible to attend National Career Development Conferences to compete against students from throughout the country.
Each CTSO consists of local high school chapters with teacher advisors. Each organization then elects State Officers who oversee statewide activities such as Fall Rallies and Spring Career Development Conferences.
There are seven CTSOs in New Hampshire chartered through their respective National CTSOs. The seven CTSOs in New Hampshire are:
DECA - An association of marketing students
FBLA - Future Business Leaders of America
FCCLA - Family Career and Community Leaders of America
FFA - An association of agriculture students
HOSA - Health Occupations Students of America
SkillsUSA - An association of trade and industry students
